USA 86 min.
From the 1860s to the 1920s, dozens of towns and counties across America violently expelled their entire African American communities. Thousands of acres lost; thousands of families forced to flee their homes. Many of these towns remain all white today.
Banished tells the story of three of these communities, in Missouri, Arkansas, and Georgia. The Black descendants who return to learn this shocking history, and the white residents who struggle with their town’s hidden past. Both are faced with the question: what can be done to repair past racial injustice today?
Filmmaker Marco Williams (Two Towns of Jasper) travels to each town, conspicuous as the only African American, and meets with historians, civic leaders and residents.
