Synopsis

In recent years, one cardinal and at least fifteen bishops left their posts after the Catholic Church learned they abused young people. the documentary follows the haunting saga of Father Marcial Maciel, who won the favor of Pope John Paul II despite a long trail of pedophilia accusations. Maciel founded the Legionaries of Christ, an ultra-right wing religious order with a $650 million budget and history of controversy. In 1998 eight former Legion seminarians go to the Vatican and file charges with Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger’s office. The Vatican Secretary of State tries to abort the Maciel case. Then, as Pope John Paul II is dying, Ratzinger orders an investigation. With location shoots in Rome, Mexico CIty and four American cities, the film follows the journey of a Vatican investigator as witnesses from several countries testify about Maciel’s psychological tyranny, imposing secret vows never to criticize him or the Legion. What will the new pope, Benedict XVI, decide?
