Synopsis

Filmmaker Phoebe Ferguson returned to New Orleans to research her family’s Carnival background and discovered the hidden world of black debutant society. Member of the Club tells the rich history of the black and white social clubs of the American south. Described through interviews with members of one of New Orleans’ most respected black social clubs, The Original Illinois Club, and visually and aurally depicted through achival footage, and photographs, the story of one family’s experience through the 2003/2004 Carnival season makes the complex history of these segregated social institutions comes alive.
