Synopsis

Little Immigrants is the story of Maria, an un-documented mother who has left her two children a 10, and an 11 year-old in the south of Mexico, to be taken care of by their grandmother. Maria would like to go home for part of the year, but tightened security means that if she returns to Mexico she might not be able to get back into the States. Desperate to see her children, she hires a “coyote” to smuggle them across the border. Once they are re-united the children have to adapt to a new language and culture. In January 2008 they all had to move to another state because Maria was not allowed to work anymore in Arizona due to new employers’ sanctions. Little Immigrants examines their story in the context of the social and political forces around the immigration issue on both sides of the fence and the recent deportations among them. It also shows the Minute Men, the church movement and Christian activists that work along the border. This compelling story offers a unique view of the immigration politics and how it affects children’s lives
